London’s Movies & TV Tours

Blinded by a Peaky:

The Gangs of Darby Sabini, Billy Kimber, Alfie Solomons, & the REAL Peaky Blinders

By order of….  All the gangsters listed above you are requested to take this tour.

We start by leaving London and heading north to what is known as the Black Country. The area so named because it was one of the areas that gave birth to the Industrial Revolution. The area of Small Heath where we are heading to made Iron, so black fumes all day.

Life in these towns in the late 1880’s was cruel and the slum dwellings that people lived in meant that social, religious, ethnic and political groups all tried to run the areas. Many turned to crime and gangs, as a life of crime was much easier, together with being more profitable.

Arriving at our destination a few hours later we set off in search of our real Peaky Blinders history.

The real gang, from Birmingham, never made it to the high level that you see on in the television series, but they did exist.   As we travel around the areas of  Bordesley and Small Heath you will hear stories of their exploits and visit the Rainbow Pub and Old Crown

The real Peaky Blinders were not as fashionably dressed as the TV characters. They wore donkey jackets,  scarfs, bell-bottom trousers, steel-capped boots and their infamous caps. They allegedly earned their name by sewing razor blades into the peaks of their flat caps.

So did Thomas Shelby exist, well no.

The two  people thought to have started the gang were Kevin Mooney (real name Thomas Gilbert) and

Thomas Mucklow.

From here it is lunch then off to the Black Country Museum. The museum is  26 acres of period shops and houses, all to explore

Your Guide will escort you around, explaining  the boat docks, the Blacksmiths shop, the Workers Institute offices,. Walk along by the canal  where the barges would travel along  from Birmingham to London. There is even a shop in the museum grounds where you can buy your own peak cap, and other men’s apparel to turn you into a 1920’s gangster. and a lot more.  There is also official merchandise to buy.

Besides filming a lot of the scenes for the hit television series in the museums grounds, they have served as film location sites for ; Our Zoo,   Arthur and George, Peaky Blinders, Stan and Ollie, Dancing on the Edge, plus many more, which you will hear about on the tour day.
