Call the Midwife film Locations

CALL THE MIDWIFE

Fact and fiction all rolled into one day.

Call the Midwife highlights the lives of a group of midwives living in East London in the late 1950s to early 1960s. Watched by over 10 million viewers  the series goes from strength to strength.

Leaving your Central London hotel you will be driven into the real East End of London to see the areas that the series replicates. There will be time to stop at the real and original Nonnatus House which gave the inspiration for the books.

We then travel into the Kent countryside to arrive at our location site.

Major parts of the series were filmed in a dockyard and there is something for everyone to do here.

There are ships to explore, go inside a submarine, see how they make rope, Train Engines to view and even a small children’s indoor play area.

If this wasn’t enough there are the film location sites to wander around in.

Walk along the avenues and see a selection of props from the Midwife series and imagine the washing lines tied across the streets from one block of flats to the other. Let your imagination run wild and you will be transported back to the East End of the 1960’s. Stand outside the notourious “Sutton Buildings”

Please note Nonnatus House scenes are filmed at a closed studio set in Surrey, not at this location.

Besides the midwife series you will find familiar places where a selection of scenes from Les Misérables was filmed, along with James Bond and a whole host of other classics.

Leaving the ships and locations behind us we head off for a traditional English pub lunch.

Over lunch is a good time to decide on the afternoon adventure.

Option 1

After lunch visit Leeds castle “THE LOVELIEST CASTLE IN THE WORLD”

Here we can walk through 900 years of history and explore 500 acres of  parkland and gardens.

The whole family will enjoy the castle, maze and grotto, you can even go punting on the moat.

Option 2.

Return towards London and stop at Eltham Palace

Walking into this Palace is walking into the decade of decadence as you are transported back to the 1930s Created for millionaires Stephen and Virginia Courtauld, Eltham Palace is part Art Deco design from the 1930’s and part medieval royal palace. The whole family will feel at home here. Why not try on clothes, play games and listen to music, as a guest of the Courtaulds.

STONEHENGE and HARRY POTTER’S OXFORD

This is a Taxi tour you can take into Harry Potterland and get a result. We start by driving through London and out to the ancient site of Stonehenge Throughout history many archaeologists and antiquarians have visited Stonehenge to try and satisfy this monumental mystery. Whether this mystery will ever be solved, Stonehenge draws visitors from all over the world. The breathtaking prehistoric monument located near Salisbury Wiltshire stands as strong today as it did 3500 years ago.

Stonehenge started as an early form of henge monument, built around 5,000 years ago, where prehistoric people buried their cremated dead. Later, the enormous sarsens and smaller bluestones were set up in the centre. Stonehenge was built in three phases with a time span of 1500 years. Consisting of over 30 million hours of labour.

There is also evidence at the construction site that it could actually date back as far as 6500 years. Leaving Stonehenge and its mysteries behind us we travel to Oxford, the city of dreaming spires. We discover the university and its colleges and also Harry Potter. See where the students ascend the stairs to the Dining Room. Stonehenge, Avebury and Harry Potter’s Hogwarts School Tour

We leave London and head for the ancient site of Stonehenge. Throughout history many archaeologists and antiquarians have visited Stonehenge to try and satisfy this monumental mystery.

After viewing  Stonehenge we head off to Avebury village

At the heart of pre-historic Avebury is the henge. Compared with other henges it is massive and though erosion and vandalism have reduced it considerably it still remains an impressive spectacle. Its construction was spread over several centuries beginning about 3000 BC when the Cove and the earliest stage of the Sanctuary were built. It would be another 600 years before the final form was achieved when the avenues were added about 2400 BC. It has been calculated that the area occupied by the stone circle at Stonehenge would fit into the outer stone circle at Avebury around 130 times. This gives some idea of how vast the Avebury actually is .Our village tour completed we head off cross country to the little village of Lacock and Harry Potter(and lunch).

For those of you that are true Harry fans this is the tour for you … Lacock village. Here you can lose yourself as you imagine you are in the corridors, classrooms and grounds of Hogwarts.  We see Professor  Slughorns  house, the original Godrics Hollow and several of the classrooms from the Harry Potter film series. We lunch in an old English pub before returning to London.

Harry Potter, Gloucester and Lacock

Leaving London we travel to Gloucester Cathedral. The church has over 900 years of history to offer you as well as being in three of the Harry potter films. The church has been a place of Christian worship continuously for over 1300 years, since Osric, an Anglo-Saxon prince, founded a religious house here in 678-9 AD.  At the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066, the monastery was not thriving and in 1072 King William I appointed Serlo, a monk from Mont St Michel in Normandy to be its Abbot. in 1089 he was able to start building the magnificent abbey church which so impresses the visitor today.

In 1216, Henry III, who had succeeded to the throne at the age of only nine, was crowned here. Most importantly for the subsequent history of this place, in 1327, King Edward II who had died in Berkeley Castle (in suspicious and, traditionally, gruesome circumstances) was buried here. A monument was erected over the tomb of the dead king.

We shall stroll this magnificent church to find out its history and to find Harry Potter. Walking the corridors and cloisters of the church finding out about scenes that were shot in The Philosophers Stone, Chamber of Secrets and The Half Blood Prince. We have several scenes to bring to life for you here which include Moaning Mrtyle, Mrs Morris, the troll and the writing on the wall, oh and don’t forget spiders. Plus as with all our tours there are some other scenes that we have kept secret which will be revealed on the day.
Leaving Gloucester we head off to the wonderful village of Lacock.

Set in rural Wiltshire, the village is famous for its picturesque streets, historic buildings and more recently as a TV and film location.

The Abbey, located at the heart of the village within its own woodland grounds, is a quirky country house of various architectural styles, built upon the foundations of a former nunnery.  The museum celebrates the achievements of former Lacock resident, William Henry Fox Talbot, famous for his contributions to the invention of photography.

Exploring this wonderful village we shall come across Godric’s Hollow, Professor Slughorns house. Then there are some of the classrooms and corridors  of  Hogwarts to visit.  This is a great family fun day out with lots of surprises and extra scenes to tell you about during the day.

Bath

“Fine balls, fine concerts, fine buildings and springs
Fine walks and fine views and a thousand fine things
Not to mention the sweet situation and air
What place, my dear mother, with Bath can compare” quote from a poem by Christopher Anstey

The Romans found the fine waters of Bath refreshing over 2000 years ago.  The city was revived by Georgian society in the 18th century. As Mrs Piozzi enthused in 1788, there was no place ‘where one lives so well for so little Money, no Place where so many Beauties meet, no Place where there are such Combinations of Gayety and such Opportunities of Snugness’.Bath is set in the rolling countryside of southwest England. Besides its history your guide will show you film locations from several famous movies shot in Bath. Jack the Ripper & Sinister London

This is despite its title a family fun tour taking a light hearted look at Jack the Ripper and Sinister London

London’s reputation as the world’s most haunted city makes this tour a MUST! Leaving your hotel we travel through the city, Your guide will tell you stories that transport you back in time to a London of numerous hangings. During 1888 terror struck the East End of London, and we retrace the footsteps of the most famous serial killer of all time. The person who committed these brutal murders was nicknamed ‘Jack the Ripper’. All the women murdered were prostitutes, and all except for one were horribly mutilated.

The first murder, Mary Ann Nicholls, 31st August. Annie Chapman 8th September. Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes 30th September and Mary Jane Kelly on 9th November. These are referred to as the ‘canonical five’ Ripper murders, although Martha Tabram, murder on 6th August 1888, is considered by some ‘ripperologists’ to be the first victim. During this tour we will try and solve the mystery that has baffled people for over 120 years. Who was he ? To this day the case remains unsolved, but will it be on your tour that we discover the truth?

After Jack the Ripper you may need a drink, so we head back to central London, hearing stories of the Phantom Bus, the Spook of Clarence House, the Ghost of Buckingham Palace, hear about the Murdered Actor, visit a Haunted Loo, and try and find a Severed Head!

After all this we reckon you definitely will need a drink so we can finish off the tour dropping you outside a typical English Pub
