You can choose any two places to visit on this mix and match tour, plus you have the option to swap a destination on the tour day. This tour is completely flexible.
Collecting you from your hotel early in the morning, we drive out into the countryside to Oxford, the “City of Dreaming Spires,” This ancient city boasts hundreds of listed buildings from every major period of British history. As we explore the city you will find that it is full of mystery, wonder, history, plus it is a city that has inspired famous writers and film makers over the years.
Your guide will walk (or drive) you around the city. You will see the major attractions, plus a selection of the 38 colleges, which make up the University Standing by the remains of the 13th century St. Martin’s Church will place us in the centre of the city. You Guide will explain each landmark to you plus allow time for photographs.
Why not climb to the top of the spire of St Mary the Virgin Church, Oxfords largest parish church. St Mary’s has one of the most beautiful spires in Oxford. You will also get the chance to visit the smallest Cathedral in England, built by Henry VIII. Your guide will also show you such places as the Radcliffe Camera, (which isn’t a camera) Brasenose College, All Souls College, Bodlien Library, Christchurch, there is an endless list. There is so much to see in the city, but don’t take our word for it, take the tour and see for yourself.
Once we have completed our time in Oxford it is off to lunch, which can be taken in one Oxfords many famous pubs or we can drive into the Cotswold’s to lunch in a 300 year old British Pub
After lunch, you can choose one of the following places to visit.
Option 1
Stonehenge – Old Stones & Bones!
We visit the most important pre-historic monument in Britain, Stonehenge.
The site has become one of the best-known prehistoric monuments in the world. We have a good look around the ancient landscape before exploring the stones. Walking around the outer circle your guide will explain the stones and the difference of Blue and Sarsen stones together with how they got there, plus, why they are there.
There is even time to visit a re-constructed Neolithic Houses displaying the tools and objects of everyday Neolithic life. Why not let the kids come face to face with a 5,500 year-old man. (no it is not your guide !!)
Option 2
The Cotswolds
You can opt for driving through the Cotswold’s Villages. These picture postcard villages are a must for people. Your guide will take you to several villages deep in the Oxfordshire Countryside. Stopping at such villages as Bourton-on-the-Water, Burford, Chipping Campden, Stow-on-the-Wold, Upper Slaughter, indeed you will be spoilt for choice on making your decisions.
Your guide will explain the history of each village you visit, whilst guiding you around it. Why not stop and have English Tea of sandwiches, cakes, plus warm freshly baked scones, with Jam and clotted cream, yummy!
Option 3
Blenheim Palace
Blenheim Palace is home to the 12th Duke of Marlborough and his family and the birth place of Winston Churchill. Today it is a UNESCO world heritage site with a fascinating history. Your guide will help you find 300 years of history under one roof. The Palace was built as a gift to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, from Queen Anne and a grateful nation in thanks for his victory at the Battle of Blenheim on 13th August 1704. Today it stands as a masterpiece of Baroque architecture.
Option 4
Stratford upon Avon
The birth and resting place of William Shakespeare. A small market town with over 800 years of history, with many buildings that have survived from the days of Shakespeare. There are fantastic areas to explore, which is why we bring our clients on tour here all the time. Visit with your guide quaint side streets with unique and individual shops, to 500 year old historical properties such as Shakespeare’s childhood home, The church where he is buried, Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, Halls Croft, New Place. There’s something for everyone.
