Old Stones & Bones!

Your tour begins with an early rise to get to Stonehenge for 9.30am We visit the most important pre-historic monument in Britain, Stonehenge.

Once at Stonehenge we can walk in the footsteps of our Neolithic ancestors. The site has become one of the best-known prehistoric monuments in Europe. We have a good look around the ancient landscape, there is even time to step inside Neolithic Houses. Here you can discover the tools and objects of everyday Neolithic life. There will also be time to visit the exhibition and visitor centre, which houses over 250 ancient objects. You will also come face to face with a 5,500 year-old man.

Besides all of this we will of course explore the stones and walk around the outer roped off outer circle to see them and get photos. You will be able to chat to you guide who will be only too pleased to discuss the theories of how they got there and what they are doing there.

1. Avebury

Avebury henge and stone circles are not very far from our first stop and a real must to see attraction. Built roughly around 2850 BC, the henge survives as a huge monument encircling an area that includes part of Avebury village. The henge has the largest stone circle in Britain, which in turn encloses two smaller stone circles. It is here that you can wander the stones and explore the village, visiting Avebury Manor and Garden plus the Alexander Keiller Museum.

2. Bradford upon Avon

Ask anyone who lives in this village and they will tell you that the nickname for this town is “Beautiful Bradford” and we agree Set perfectly in the Avon Valley, it is a unique combination of river, canal and architecture all rolled into one. It’s no surprise that this place has drawn people through the ages.
Stroll through the town with your guide and you will be walking through time. Your guide will help you wander and wonder, by telling you its fascinating history The town has for the past 2000 years had inhabitants, all of them leaving their mark for you to see. They have included the Romans, Saxons, Normans, Georgians and Victorians. Each group has created a chapter in Bradford on Avon’s remarkable history. You will love it!

3. Bowood House

This beautiful 18th-century manor is nestled in the Wiltshire countryside. On arrival, explore the house (own expense), and admire the Georgian architecture and plush furnishings you find. Discover historical artefacts and heirlooms including Queen Victoria’s wedding chair and Napoleon’s death mask, and learn of the Marquis and Marchioness of Lansdowne — the ancestral owners. Delve into the gardens, widely considered among the finest in England, and stroll across the sweeping lawns to the peaceful lake at the bottom. Discover hedgerows and flowerbeds laid out by Capability Brown — a famous British landscape gardener — and capture the pretty views on camera.

4. Salisbury

Also known as ‘the city in the countryside’, Salisbury is surrounded by a landscape of wonder. The Spire of Salisbury reaches up into the skyline and can seen from all around the city. Your guide will escort you around the church and the chapter house, where you will find the best preserved of the four original Magna Carta manuscripts dating from 1215AD. There are timbered buildings, historic houses, this medieval city has something for everyone and your guide will know the best places to take you to and explain Salisbury in detail to you.

5. Bath

From Stonehenge we drive onto Bath, a Roman city that was revived by Georgian society in the 18th century,. The town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Bath is set in the rolling countryside of southwest England. Once here you will be able to explore the Roman baths, Bath Abbey, and Pultney Bridge – there will also be time for some shopping in the antique and craft shops!
