Downton Abbey; The TV series, the movie & now the TOUR….
Discover the countryside filming sites on our ‘Downton Abbey Experience” In the most iconic form of London transport: a Black Taxi. As your private driver/ guide drives, learn about the lives of the fictional Crawley family from the hit TV series, and hear about Britain’s present-day aristocracy, too. This must-do tour, inspired by the programme and film is the ultimate Downton fans dream tour. Not only is your guide a professionally registered tour guide, they are also Downton Abbey experts. As with all our Downton Abbey tours your day starts when your guide collects you from your hotel and drives you out into the Oxfordshire countryside.
The star attraction of the morning will be visiting the Cotswold village that became the village of Downton. Your Guide will give you a tour of the village, where you will see the exteriors of familiar sites such as Downton hospital, 2 village pubs, the former home of Matthew Crawley, The fairground area, war memorial site, plus many more locations, including the local church, where all the weddings and funerals took place. We will visit inside the church (providing the church has no services on) There will be time for you to explore the village for yourself as well.
Then travelling cross country, with a lunch stop on the way we head for the highlight of the day, the Crème de la crème ( the best of the best) of family homes; Highclere Castle.
The castle estate dates back to Anglo Saxon England in the year 749. Fast forward 1093 years to 1842 and Sir Charles Barry, (he designed the Houses of Parliament,) transformed Highclere House into the present day Highclere Castle.
We will not have time to visit all 250 plus rooms in the Castle Saloon during our tour, but we will explore the main state rooms so familiar from “Downton Abbey”. You will see some of the bedrooms and living rooms that will be so familiar to you all. There is also the Egyptian Exhibition to explore, celebrating the 5th Earl of Carnarvon’s discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun.
Besides the castle rooms and exhibition, there will be time to see the gardens, and of course the souvenir shop, before we head back to London.
